This easy crockpot cinnamon applesauce is made with simple ingredients and requires minimal effort. Just toss apples, cinnamon, and a touch of sweetener into your slow cooker and let it work its magic for a warm, comforting, and healthy homemade treat.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 pounds apples (mix of sweet and tart, e.g., 2 lbs Honeycrisp or Fuji + 1 lb Granny Smith)
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 23 tablespoons pure maple syrup or brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1/4 cup water
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)
  • 1 whole star anise (optional)

Instructions

  1. Wash, core, and chop apples into 1-2 inch chunks. No need to peel.
  2. Place apple chunks in a 5-6 quart slow cooker. Add cinnamon, maple syrup or brown sugar, lemon juice, salt, and water. Stir to coat.
  3. Cover and cook on LOW for 4-5 hours or on HIGH for 2-3 hours, until apples are fork-tender.
  4. Mash with a potato masher for chunky applesauce, or use an immersion blender for smooth applesauce. (Alternatively, carefully blend in batches in a regular blender.)
  5. Taste and adjust sweetness or spice as desired.
  6. Let applesauce cool completely in the crockpot with the lid off. It will thicken as it cools.
  7. Transfer to airtight containers and refrigerate for up to 2 weeks, or freeze for up to 3 months.

Notes

Don’t peel the apples; the skins add fiber and pectin for natural thickening. Use a mix of sweet and tart apples for best flavor. Start with less sweetener and adjust to taste. Let applesauce cool uncovered to thicken properly.
