This copycat Starbucks brown sugar oat milk shaken espresso is a quick, easy, and affordable way to enjoy your favorite coffee shop drink at home. With just four main ingredients and a simple shaking technique, you’ll get that signature frothy foam and balanced sweetness in under 5 minutes.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 shots espresso (about 2 ounces or 60 ml)
  • 2 tablespoons (30 grams) brown sugar (light or dark)
  • 1 cup (240 ml) oat milk (barista edition recommended)
  • 1 cup ice cubes
  • ¼ teaspoon cinnamon (optional)
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)

Instructions

  1. Brew 2 shots of hot espresso (about 2 ounces total). If using a moka pot, fill the bottom chamber with water just below the valve, add finely ground espresso to the filter basket without tamping, and screw on the top. Place over medium heat until you hear a gentle gurgling sound. Remove from heat immediately.
  2. While the espresso is still hot, add 2 tablespoons of brown sugar directly to the hot liquid. Stir until completely dissolved.
  3. Stir in ¼ teaspoon of cinnamon and ½ teaspoon of vanilla extract if using.
  4. Add 1 cup of ice cubes to your cocktail shaker or mason jar.
  5. Carefully pour the hot espresso mixture over the ice.
  6. Secure the lid tightly and shake vigorously for 15-20 seconds.
  7. Discard the melted ice from the shaker and fill your serving glass with fresh ice.
  8. Strain the shaken espresso into your glass over the fresh ice.
  9. Slowly pour 1 cup of oat milk over the back of a spoon to preserve the foam layer.
  10. Give it a gentle stir with a long spoon to incorporate the oat milk, or leave it layered for a dramatic presentation. Insert a straw and enjoy.

Notes

For best foam, use hot espresso and shake vigorously for 15-20 seconds. Let oat milk sit at room temperature for 5 minutes before using to avoid shocking the espresso. If you don’t have a shaker, a mason jar works perfectly. For a less sweet version, reduce brown sugar to 1 tablespoon.
