Crispy Baked Mummy Pretzel Bites with Marinara

Crispy Baked Mummy Pretzel Bites - featured image

Fun and festive Halloween snack featuring soft pretzel dough wrapped around string cheese to resemble mummies, baked until golden and served with marinara sauce.

Ingredients

Scale
  • Refrigerated pretzel dough (1 tube)
  • String cheese (mozzarella sticks)
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • Coarse sea salt or pretzel salt
  • Marinara sauce (for dipping)
  • Butter (optional, for brushing)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Line two large baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. Remove string cheese from the fridge and let sit for 5 minutes to firm up but not freeze.
  3. Unroll pretzel dough and divide into small pieces, roughly the size of a golf ball. Roll into smooth balls.
  4. Flatten a dough ball in your palm, place a stick of string cheese in the center, and stretch dough to cover the cheese completely. Pinch top and bottom to seal.
  5. Tear or cut small strips of remaining dough. Wrap strips around the cheese-covered dough ball, leaving small gaps for ‘eye’ holes. Press ends into the body to secure.
  6. Beat egg with water in a small bowl. Brush mummy bites gently with egg wash.
  7. Sprinkle coarse salt over the top.
  8. Bake for 12-15 minutes or until deep golden brown and edges are crisp.
  9. Remove from oven and brush with melted butter if desired.
  10. Cool on a wire rack for at least 5 minutes before serving warm with marinara sauce.

Notes

Keep dough cold to prevent sticking. Do not overstuff with cheese to prevent leaking. Serve marinara sauce warm, not boiling. Can be made ahead and refrigerated for up to 24 hours or frozen unbaked.
