This recipe delivers crispy, golden air fryer french fries with a crunchy exterior and fluffy interior using simple ingredients and a soaking method to remove excess starch.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 large or 4 medium Russet potatoes
  • Cold water (for soaking)
  • 12 tablespoons olive oil or avocado oil
  • Salt to taste (kosher salt or sea salt)
  • Optional seasonings: garlic powder, paprika, black pepper, dried herbs like rosemary or thyme

Instructions

  1. Wash and peel potatoes if preferred; cut into uniform 1/4-inch (6 mm) thick sticks.
  2. Place cut potatoes in a large bowl and cover with cold water. Soak for 30 to 60 minutes to remove excess starch.
  3. Drain and dry potatoes thoroughly using a kitchen towel or paper towels.
  4. Toss fries with 1 to 2 tablespoons of olive or avocado oil, salt, and optional seasonings; coat evenly.
  5. Preheat air fryer to 380°F (193°C) for 3-5 minutes.
  6. Arrange fries in a single layer in the air fryer basket; avoid overcrowding.
  7. Air fry for 15 to 20 minutes, shaking or flipping fries halfway through cooking.
  8. Check for doneness; fries should be golden brown and crispy. Cook an additional 2-3 minutes if needed.
  9. Serve immediately, optionally sprinkling more salt before serving.

Notes

Soaking the potatoes removes excess starch for crispiness. Dry fries thoroughly before air frying to avoid steaming. Do not overcrowd the basket. Shake or flip fries halfway through cooking for even browning. For extra crispiness, blast fries at 400°F (204°C) for 2-3 minutes before serving. Reheat leftovers in air fryer at 375°F (190°C) for 3-5 minutes to revive crispiness. Avoid microwaving leftovers.
