A simple, healthy, and thick homemade applesauce made with just five ingredients in a slow cooker. It requires minimal prep time and offers a comforting, cinnamon-spiced flavor perfect for snacks or meal prep.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 67 medium apples (mixed tart and sweet varieties like Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Fuji), cored and chopped
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 12 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 12 tablespoons honey or maple syrup (optional, based on apple sweetness)
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice

Instructions

  1. Wash the apples thoroughly. Peel if desired for a smoother texture, or leave skins on for extra fiber. Cut into rough chunks and remove cores and tough stems.
  2. Place the apple chunks into the slow cooker pot.
  3. Pour in the water, honey (or maple syrup), lemon juice, and cinnamon.
  4. Stir gently to distribute the spices and sweetener evenly.
  5. Cover and cook on LOW for 6-8 hours, or on HIGH for 3-4 hours, until apples are extremely tender.
  6. Remove the lid. Use an immersion blender for a smooth texture or a potato masher for a chunky consistency.
  7. Taste and adjust sweetness or thickness by adding more honey or water as needed.
  8. Let cool slightly before serving. It will thicken as it cools.

Notes

For best results, use apples that break down easily. If using firm apples like Pink Lady, they may not soften enough. Do not over-stir during cooking to preserve pectin. If freezing, ensure the applesauce is completely cool to prevent ice crystals. The flavor improves after sitting in the fridge for a day.
