These creepy witch finger cookies are buttery, slightly sweet, and shaped like gnarled fingers with almond sliver fingernails. Perfect for Halloween parties, they’re easy to make and guaranteed to get a reaction.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon almond extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • About 3035 whole almond slivers or sliced almonds
  • Red jam or food coloring gel

Instructions

  1. Cream the butter and sugar. In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter and powdered sugar together on medium speed until light and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes. Scrape down the sides of the bowl halfway through.
  2. Add the wet ingredients. Beat in the egg, almond extract, and vanilla extract until fully combined.
  3. Mix in the dry ingredients. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing on low speed until just combined. Do not overmix.
  4. Chill the dough. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
  5. Preheat the oven to 325°F (160°C). Line your baking sheet with parchment paper.
  6. Shape the fingers. Take a small piece of dough, about the size of a walnut, and roll it into a log shape about 3-4 inches long, slightly thicker at one end and tapered at the other. Place on the prepared baking sheet. Repeat with remaining dough, spacing fingers about 2 inches apart.
  7. Add the details. Use a small knife or toothpick to create knuckle lines by pressing gently into the dough. Make two or three lines per finger. Pinch and press to create wrinkles. Press an almond sliver into the tapered end at a slight angle.
  8. Add the ‘blood’ or cuticle. With a toothpick or knife tip, dab a tiny amount of red jam or food coloring gel at the base of the almond fingernail.
  9. Chill again. Place the shaped cookies in the refrigerator for 10 minutes.
  10. Bake for 12-15 minutes, until set and just barely starting to turn golden on the bottom. Tops should remain pale.
  11. Cool. Let cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

Keep dough cold to prevent spreading. Chill shaped cookies for 10 minutes before baking. Use a light touch for knuckle lines. Angle almond fingernails for realistic look. Bake on lower rack for even bake. Let cool completely before moving.
