This football cheese ball is a showstopper that tastes just as good as it looks. It’s a creamy, savory cheese mixture coated in salty pretzel crumbs and shaped like a football, perfect for game-day parties.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 16 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 2 cups sharp cheddar cheese, freshly shredded
  • 1/2 cup cooked bacon, crumbled (about 6 strips)
  • 1/4 cup green onions, thinly sliced (about 34 stalks)
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 1 cup salted pretzel sticks, finely crushed
  • 1215 whole salted pretzel sticks for laces
  • Fresh parsley, finely chopped (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Soften the cream cheese: Take cream cheese out of fridge at least 30 minutes before starting. It should be soft enough that a finger pressed into it leaves an indent. If in a rush, cut into cubes and microwave on 50% power for 15-second intervals until just softened. Do not melt.
  2. Mix the cheese base: In a large mixing bowl, beat softened cream cheese with a hand mixer on medium speed until completely smooth and fluffy—about 2 minutes. Scrape down sides of bowl with a spatula.
  3. Add the flavor: Add shredded cheddar cheese, crumbled bacon, sliced green onions, garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, and cayenne (if using). Mix on low speed until just combined. Taste and add a pinch of salt and pepper if needed.
  4. Shape the football: Lay a large piece of plastic wrap on counter. Scrape cheese mixture onto center of plastic wrap. Using plastic wrap, shape mixture into a rough football shape about 8 inches long and 4-5 inches wide at center. Wrap tightly, then use hands to smooth and shape further through plastic.
  5. Chill until firm: Place wrapped cheese ball on a baking sheet or plate and refrigerate for at least 2 hours. Overnight is even better.
  6. Crush the pretzels: While cheese ball chills, place 1 cup of pretzel sticks in a zip-top bag and crush with a rolling pin until you have a mix of fine crumbs and small chunks. Set aside.
  7. Coat the football: Remove chilled cheese ball from fridge and unwrap. Pour pretzel crumbs onto a large plate. Gently roll cheese ball in crumbs, using hands to press crumbs onto all sides. Leave a small, clean strip along top center of football for lace lines.
  8. Add the laces: Take whole pretzel sticks and gently press them into the clean stripe on top of football. Start at one end, placing a pretzel stick perpendicular to long edge. Leave a small gap, then place next one. Fit about 5-6 pretzel sticks across top.
  9. Final chill: Place finished football cheese ball back in fridge for another 20-30 minutes to let everything set.
  10. Serve: Transfer cheese ball to serving platter. If desired, sprinkle finely chopped fresh parsley around base to look like ‘grass.’ Serve with sturdy crackers, pretzel chips, or sliced vegetables.

Notes

Don’t skip the chill time. Shape while soft. Keep pretzel laces straight. Make ahead for better flavor. Watch the salt.
